Beaches of Baška: from Vela plaža to hidden coves
Baška has around thirty pebble beaches and crystal-clear sea. Some are right in the centre, with cafés and sunbeds; others are hidden in quiet coves that you reach on foot or by boat. Here is a short guide to help you choose the right beach for your day.
Vela plaža – the symbol of Baška
Vela plaža is about 1,800 m long and has proudly flown the Blue Flag since 1999. It is ideal for families: the pebbles are fine, the sea is clean and shallow near the shore, and cafés and restaurants are just a few steps away. You can rent sunbeds, umbrellas, pedalos and windsurf boards, and taxi boats to the more remote beaches leave from here.
Along the promenade there are also the smaller town beaches Palada and Macel, close to bars and restaurants.
Bunculuka – naturist beach
Over the hill east of Baška lies Bunculuka, an almost 500 m long beach in the naturist camp of the same name. It has a bistro, a shop, showers, sunbeds and a separate area for dogs, and you can rent SUP boards and kayaks. The beach is for naturists only – visitors who are not staying at the camp are welcome as long as they respect naturist rules.
Vrženica, Vela luka and Mala luka – beaches for explorers
Further east you will find a string of quiet bays: Jablanova (with pine shade right behind it), Storišće, Vrženica with its canyon, Dubna, Konjska, Gnjilova and finally Vela luka and Mala luka – two of the most beautiful coves near Baška. Vela luka has sunbeds and a spot serving coffee and drinks, and just before the beach you will find the Buymer fishing museum. From Vela luka a path leads over the hill to Mala luka in about half an hour. Mala luka has a small fish restaurant right in the bay, and sailing boats often anchor here for the night.
You can reach these beaches by taxi boat from Baška or on foot along marked hiking trails. In summer the walk is more demanding because of the heat and the lack of shade, so set off early in the morning and return in the late afternoon, when it is cooler. Bring enough water and good shoes.
Island Prvić – small beaches with few people
Opposite Vela plaža lies Prvić, the largest uninhabited island in Croatia. A taxi speedboat takes you there in a few minutes. Prvić has lots of small pebble beaches with very few people and beautiful, unspoiled nature – perfect for a quiet day by the sea. Please take all your rubbish back with you.
Towards the lighthouse and Bracol
Southwest of Baška there are more small beaches: Škuljica near the lighthouse, Mudraci, Mrmna, Vela draga and the bay of Bracol, which has two small beaches, a small restaurant and a pier for small boats. You can walk to the lighthouse and the beach just below it; the other coves are easiest to reach by boat. In Bracol there is a small restaurant serving fresh fish and homemade cured meats.
Useful tips
- The beaches are pebbly – water shoes are handy, especially for children.
- Taxi boats and rent-a-boat services operate from the harbour and Vela plaža in season.
- On remote beaches there is no shade or shop: bring water, snacks and an umbrella.
- Combine a beach day with a walk – for example the path to the Moon Plateau.
The Baška Tourist Board has a map of all marked hiking and cycling trails. More information and a full list of beaches can be found on their website: visitbaska.hr.
